RE: [FW1] SecureClient for Win2K - Initialization error

Ray,

Create C:\fwenc.log
Every time SecuRemote starts up it will write debug info into this file.
Also, if you have access to CheckPoint or Nokia knowledgebases, you should
be able to download a utility called srinfo.exe, which can be used to gather
info for the techsupport folks...

Subject: RE: [FW1] SecureClient for Win2K - Initialization error

Crazy month. Couldn't retest until now. I did have a personal firewall
(ZoneAlarm), but I thought I originally installed that a while back. For a
test, I de-installed SecureClient and ZoneAlarm, ran through the registry
with regedit looking for any strings for the service (Checkpoint, chkp,
firewall, fw-1, etc.) and cleaned them out. Rebooted, and tried again to
install SecureClient. Same results as before. "Initialization error".

Is there any more information I can gather? Can I run the FWSRService.exe in
a DEBUG mode to log what it's doing? Can anyone tell me what it's looking
for that it's not finding? What circumstances can cause it to produce the
"initialization error" message? I don't want to have to re-install W2K clean
just to install SecureClient. Someone at Checkpoint should be able to review
the code and see what conditions produce that error.

I'm amenable to running a special, debug version of SecureClient, if need
be, to determine why it won't run on my machine. Please, anyone, HELP!

hmmm
so you made sure no registry info survived?
do you have any network monitoring type bindings in the ip stack - i.e.
winpcap etc??
any kind of funny network adapters?

just some ideas :)

Well, I tried what you suggested. I backed up my userc.C file and removed
SecureClient via Add/Remove Programs. I rebooted and verified that the "in
use" files were deleted, and I manually deleted the SecuRemote directory. I
ran regedt32 (I prefer that over regedit for everything except searches) and
verified that the FW1 registry key was gone. I did a clean install, using
the clean userc.C file and rebooted. I got the exact same error on startup.

Do you have any ideas as to what it doesn't like?

i've had this problem before - make a backup of userc.C
remove secureclient via add/remove progs
remove all dirs
fire up regedit and remove the software keys and service keys
reinstall
restore userc.C
usually solves the problems

I had SecureClient 4.1 SP-2 version 4166.0.0 running on my Win2K laptop for
a while. I had de-installed it to document the installation process.
However, now I cannot run it. It loads, and I reboot, but it comes up with
an "Initialization Error" every time the FWSRSERVICE.EXE tries to run. Any
clues? I've searched around but noone has reported this problem before. My
Win9x and WinNT clients are running just fine. HELP!
