Thanks for the info Mark, some stats and test plan of what you did would be
handy one day, as it is hard to find such performance data.

In our testing we do exactly this, and Linux consistently outperforms NT
by a BIG margin.  I've heard it's possible to remove ISPO from a Nokia
IP330 and install Red Hat.  It is, after all, a PC under the hood.  It
might be possible to do the same with NT, which would allow apples to
apples comparison of NT vs. Nokia.  Anyone feeling adventurous?  ;-)

www.rainfinity.comp.s.  IMHO, the best things about Nokia are the form factor (which is
not unique; very speedy 1U rack-mount servers can be obtained for less
from Sun, Compaq, Penquin et al) and the management tools.  For what
it's worth, my vote is for open OSs like Solaris, Linux, NT, rather than
a proprietary OS like IPSO.  Although ISPO may be more stable than NT,
it's no more stable than Linux or Solaris.  And, it's much easier to
find expertise, spare parts, patches, and 3rd party utilities for an
open OS.
