RE: [FW1] Nokia vs. NT

The only real problem with NT is that the routing engine is not very good.
Therefore, NT is not a good solution for high throughput even with a big
processor and tonnes of RAM.

NT and Nokia both work well. I like the Nokia stuff - it's a tidy way of
doing things in terms of physical size etc, but also the software - there
is inbuilt support for package and version management. They're easy to get
going, and so far haven't given me any problems (in about 19 months). Not
having to deal with a neverending list of service packs and hotfixes is a
timesaver too.

I don't know if this is quite what you meant, but without additional
hardware, the Nokia's won't perform true load balancing - redundancy yes,
through VRRP (like HSRP) and FW-1's state sync, but the only load-balancing
you'll get would be a bodge using multiple VRRP groups to present multiple
exit points - in fairness though this is the same for all other
implementations too.

At the end of the day, both are usable platforms. I'm not rabid about NT
vs Unix, but IMO the Nokia's have the edge on management, sacrifice nothing
in fw-1 product terms, and win over everything else with VRRP.

Hope this is of some use.

We are looking into switching our existing Firewall platform from NT/Win2K
to Nokia. I am curious to see how those of you using Checkpoint on Nokia
like it.
We are hoping that this switch will lower down time and decrease
administrative overhead. The specific model we are planning to purchase is
the Nokia 440. We plan to purchase two to provide load balancing and
redundancy.
Of course our vendor likes our plan but I want to hear from some admins
that
are actually supporting this platform. Thanks in advance!
