Certainly when I tried upgrading from NG_FP3 edition 1 to NG_AI on secureplatform I also needed to upgrade the patch utility FIRST or it does not work, and fails when it tries to uncompress the checkpoint wrapper. If this helps, try installing the FP3 edition 2 patch hotfix from the download site and upgrade again. Handily it isn't included in the R54 upgrade pack even though it's sort of necessary.
