If I remember correctly Cluster XL (Pre FP4) and Stonebeat are
based on multicast technology and Rainwall is based on unicast
technology. Each one has advantages and disadvantages; with multicast
solutions there are generally strict switch requirements because of the
use of multicasts to load balance the traffic to every node in the
cluster.

If you can afford them there are at least two methods available
that do not require ClusterXL, Stonebeat, or Rainwall; one method is
from Crossbeam which is a hardware base load balancer, and the other is
using stick connections feature Cisco CSM modules in the Catalyst 6500
to load balance traffic.
