Re: [FW-1] Two ISPs Questions

If you are just looking for increased speed, you will benefit the most
from getting two connections from the same ISP. Most ISPs should be able
to guide you through the process of binding the two T1s together. It
depends on your hardware and your ISPs hardware/policies on how this will
be accomplished, but should not be a problem to get configured. If you
are looking at two T1s, you might also want to look at getting a DS3 with
3MB of traffic available. Cost wise it is generally not much more
expensive than two T1 lines, and telco generally respond a lot quicker to
DS3 customers problems than T1 customers problems.

If you want some increase in speed but are also looking for increased
redundancy, then getting a T1 from a new ISP and then running BGP will
provide redundancy, but may provide a limited increase in throughput
depending on the ISPs you choose. But in some rare cases having a second
T1 with a second ISP could provide no bandwidth increase at all. Also, if
you are looking at redundancy, it has been my experience that outages are
generally caused by the local loop (T1 line) going down, not by the ISP
itself going down. If you have two T1s going to different ISPs for
redundancy instead of to the same ISP, it is still likely that both T1s
could go down together if your local telco has a problem.

All said and done, I would recommend getting the second T1 (or a new DS3)
from the same ISP if bandwidth is your driving motivation.

For what its worth......

Eric

Curt,
I would strongly recommend two T1's with two different ISP's for the sake
of
Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery. It might be easy in short term
to
go with one ISP but in long term, you will benefit by going with two
different ISP's.

Just my two cents..

Subject: [FW-1] Two ISPs Questions

We have reached the limit for one T1 for our firewall. We are looking
at putting in a second T1. Can someone give me advice on if is better
to go with two ISPs or one ISP? If we go with one we can IMA the two
T1s together. If we go with two how do we do this? Would something
have to be done on the ISPs side to be able to use both? I guess I need
total advice on doing this.

Thanks,
Curt Miller
