Hi Gary,

Not using NG yet, but have been struggling with several Cisco/CP tunnels over the past two months. I have yet to come up with a single explanation for failures, and to be fair the ciscos on the other end have varied greatly (PIX, 3000 concentrator, 2600/7400 routers, etc.). I succeeded in all cases when there was a single Nokia on my end. At another site where there are two 650's with VRRP I have yet to succeed with even one of them (in fact we buckled and bought PIX 515s just to terminate these tunnels).

For one of them the solution was to scrap MD5 and use SHA1. No explanation for why... on the cisco there were crypto maps for both, but when we on a whim switched to SHA1 it came up fine.

On another scrapping the use of PFS fixed the tunnel. Again no real explanation - we both had it configured and assumed it should work. It didn't until we both took it out.

On another it was an SA lifetime issue. You have to be careful with this on 4.1 as it is a system wide value that might affect other running tunnels. I have heard that this can be changed on a per VPN basis with NG...?

Hope this gives you a few things to try, anyway.

Thanks,

Thanks for the rapid reply Jean-Francois.

Absolutely agree with you that a mismatch exists. The isssue is where?
I have checkpoint, nokia, and cisco looking at this currently, but it's
dragging on a bit.

The strange thing is that I had this problem when we first setup the VPN
some 3-4 months ago, and then the problem just went away......!!? (link
established ok and was ok ever since.) Anyway, I had reason to stop/start
the box last week, and the problem came back.

It's a wierd one, I can't wait to crack it and document because I see quite
a few others have seen the same problem.
Gary

It means that Phase 2 encryption method differs from Cisco and
Checkpoint. Perhaps you should have a look into the Cisco and "debug
isakmp" on it ?
