The original course materials' biggest advantage is that just about everything on the test is straight out of the book. The now-defunct FP2 tests (to me) were basically 20% experience and 80% "Check Point Think." Of course, if you deal with larger installations hands-on the experiential component is more helpful, but if you go in not knowing "Checkpointlogic" you're in for a frustrating ride. Ditto on making sure you get FP3 materials, since that's what the exams are on now. FP3 certainly flipped enough "Checkpointspeak" upside down to render FP2 training material insufficient for the purpose of test taking. Also, make sure that the books on ebay or for FP3 - they update them for each FP. As far as preparing for the test, it just depends what you're good at. If you can read through a book and then take a test on the material, just do that (it's quite a bit less expensive).
