The mail command spawns sendmail to do actual mail delivery. Do you mean running a sendmail listener for incoming mail versus using sendmail to send outgoing mail? Yeah, you probably should not be running a sendmail daemon listening on *:25. For older sendmail versions, you can still send mail with no daemon, or run it without listening (no '-bd' option) so queued messages are retried periodically. For newer versions of sendmail, a listening daemon is required to send mail, but it should be bound to 127.0.0.1:25. -- Crist J.
