Re: [FW-1] How to use SENDMAIL ??

Title: RE: [FW-1] How to use SENDMAIL ??

From Checkpoint's Secure Knowledge section since I'm not sure what version you're running:

Environment: FireWall-1 4.1, FireWall-1 4.0, SMTP Security Server, SMTP

Symptoms:
The command "sendmail -s Alert -t mailer root" hangs from the command lineThe command "sendmail -s Alert -t mailer root" works normally when executed by the FireWall-1 software automatically

Cause:

Solution:
The command "sendmail -s Alert -t mailer root" is used to send mail.
When FireWall-1 calls the sendmail program, it provides the data needed to complete the action. When the program is called from the command line, the user must provide the data to complete the action. Sendmail will wait at the command line until all of the necessary data is collected. While it is waiting, the program appears to hang.

So this might be why your test isn't working.

On another note, I'm running FP3 on a Win2k box, and the syntax is apparently different now. It uses a built-in command for the sendmail:

internal_send_mail -s Alert -t mail_ip -f sender_address recipient_address

Of course, I've yet to get this to work :). I've posted on Checkpoint's newsgroups but no one seems to have an answer there either. The old sendmail stuff worked fine on my old FW1 4.1/NT4 box. Maybe this info will help someone figure this out.

Ali,

Not sure about NG, however on UNIX you usually use the mail command. Run
man mail to find out more about it. Running Sendmail on a firewall is
usually not a good idea.
