It really doesn't matter that on the 4.0 box you can't define a "4.1" firewall. The things can talk to each other regardless. Your bigger hurdle is probably that 4.0 has no support for subnet negotiation, and 4.1 tries subnet negotiation by default. Be sure to tell your 4.1 firewall *not* to do subnet negotiation when talking to the 4.1 box.
