we had similar problems (even with PCAnywhere 10.5) and tried
Timbuktu (http://www.netopia.com/en-us/software/products/tb2/index.html)
which we found to be superior and did not lose connection while using
it with Securemote.

Me too, and virtually all the problems I encountered
trying to get this to work for sys admins, was with
client/server configuration. PCA permissions and confirming
connection through the FW are trivial. Most admins forget
to test if they can connect to the server locally and go
right into trying to find a FW problem. Put a client machine
on the private network with the server and make sure you can
connect locally using the local IP. Once you confirm the
client can connect to the server, take the client outside the
network. The only thing you should have to change is the
IP address of the server. You should see a stat, then a data
connection go through. Check your server logs. It should
show a client connect attempt. If you are not being allowed
in, the logs should tell you why.
