You're wrong. Pings (ICMP echo requests and echo replies, type 8 and type 0,
respectively) are the same whether you're on Windows, a UNIX-type OS
(Solaris, AIX, HP-UX, BSDs, etc.), UNIX-like (Linux), or most anything else
(Cisco IOS, etc.).

You're thinking of how "traceroute" works on Windows versus UNIX-ish OSes.
Windows sends out pings (ICMP echo requests) with varying TTL. UNIX-ish OSes
use high-port UDP packets with varying TTL.
