If I understood you correctly you need the following info:
- use short log if you want to only track the minimum of information about
firewall connections (that generates smaller log)
- use long log if you need the maximum of information for further log
analysis (the largest log; switch the log frequently; transfer zipped logs
to another location; clean the /log directory often)
- use accounting log if you use any special log analysis software programs
that require accounting log (still pretty large log; do the same as above)

Is that what you wanted to know?
