DES uses a 56 bit key. Triple DES, or 3DES, applies the DES algorithm
three times increasing the key length to 168. I remember reading
somewhere that this makes cracking as difficult as breaking a 112 bit
key, not 168 as you might expect. The
freeswan.org
website has some info on this here. If you are serious about security you must use 3DES. DES is just too easy to break using brute force techniques due to the short key length.
