Ah, I see it now, when the response is too large to fit in UDP packets, the resolver is supposed to try a TCP connection instead. (Assuming the DNS server responds indicating that the response is too large) I've never seen this happen, though. It sounds like the problem here is possibly a timeout issue, since the original post implies that the response does get through if it is tried again. If it were an issue with the size of the response, it would never get through. I have seen this happen from time to time, where a query fails, and then succeeds if it is tried again immediately.
