Re: [FW-1] Newbie Question

Hi,

I would definitely second the PhoneBoy book praise, as the book is by far the
single best CheckPoint FW-1
resource I have come across also. The book grew out of his great Web site, so
its not to be considered
a one off "book", as such: that's why its so good.

VAR Training, while important, can be uneven, I have heard some pretty bad
stories. One
VAR I know does not install NG yet, but just stopped giving the 4.1 course, and
now only
provides the NG course. That can't be good, as those teaching the course have no
real
world NG experience. So go for the training with a training partner that deploys
Nokia's,
also look at the Nokia courses....But yeah do the training course....(you get a
sample FW-1
CD which has the manuals on it during the course.....and the actual course
training manuals are pretty
good).

The manuals are important clearly.......

Make sure the CheckPoint software subscription is current (sounds like it is)
contact the original VAR, or
pick your own, from the CP site. You can buy a hard copy of the manuals for
$100, if your software sub
is current. And, the old or new VAR, should be able to provide you a CD with the
softcopy manuals on it.

The "Advance Troubleshooting Guide" avail if you have a CheckPoint support login
(don't need an
actual support contract) is also pretty good.

Hi Jim:

I was not trying to be a wise guy: I have a CP support contract and manuals.
(and I've used them both a lot...) It's just my opinion that the other book is a
better
reference especially for someone trying to take in the "whole product" at once.
I've run
CP since v3.0 on Solaris and I got more out of Phoneboy's book faster than I
ever
got from the other sources. I certainly respect your thoughts and opinions on
this subject and am
only writing simply bc I don't want to be thought some 17yr old fool. I am a
fool,
but I'm a lot older than that. ;-)
Security and uptime are our two most important networking functions here, and
they're both my
sole responsibility. We have not had a security related incident in 4 years, and
had 0 down time in the
past 12 months despite numerous server failures, switch failures, T1 outages,
9/11 outages (our internet and phones
were still up after the blast in our NYC office) etc. We're not where we want to
get to, but we're doing alright.

Anyhow, thanks for being on the list and for sharing your thoughts, experiences
and opinions with all. I do sincerely
appreciate them; especially because we differ.

Respectfully,

The 'phoneboy' book is a good guide for those new to the product but
couldn't possibly replace a proper set of manuals and a support contract
with a VAR. The product is simply to vast to cover all aspects in a few
hundred pages.

I suppose it depends how seriously you take your network security/uptime.

I second that reccomendation FWIW. Phoneboy's book is the closest thing to a
"how to actually
use FW-1" that has ever been written.. He did an excellent job in my opinion
and if I had to
choose between having his book or the CP manual with a support contract I'd
choose his book.
Seriously.
FYI the unix version on the Nokia if I'm not mistaken is a propietary
hardened version of BSD
known as IPSO.

Subject: [FW-1] Newbie Question

We purchased, through a bankruptcy sale, an entire operation that utilizes
Firewall-1. I'm not sure why but Checkpoint is being less than helpful as we
(I) attempt to figure it out. They have transferred the license but when
asked about documentation, the only answer I have received is to check the
knowledge base on-line. Now, as good as the knowledge base is, for a newbie,
I am looking for a manual that covers everything or at least give me an
understanding of the unit. The one we have is on a NOKIA box and I don't
even know what flavour of UNIX it runs for an O/S! Apparently I can get to
the network on the other side by utilizing something called SecureRemote but
I can find no step by step account of how to accomplish this.

If anyone knows of an on-line manual or how I go about getting a printed one
- please enlighten me.

Thanks for your help!
