Re: [FW-1] Newbie Question

Hi Kelvin,

Been there !!!
Sorry to say that it really is not that simple ! Doc is acknowledged to be
limited (I think its all part of the security !!).

If you have access to the NOKIA knowledge base then you are halfway there ;
also look at the "www.phoneboy.com" web site.

The operating system is hardened FREEBSD (the FREEBSD web site has a
command list, but its not an exact match for NOKIA IPSO).
There is some "man" page info on IPSO, but not a lot !

How you access this depends on your setup ; you could have a standalone box
where all components are in one place.... or you could have the NOKIA
running as just the "Inspection Engine" and have a Management Station
elsewhere (I have mine on NT). You need to let us know more about your
general setup ?

I like to think of the operating system and the firewall software as two
separate entities..... so access the IPSO box either with "Voyager" (IPSO
has a built-in Web Server, so you should be able to use any browser to
access this ; userid could be "admin" but passwords are up to you !), or
you may be able to telnet to it, to access it as a "normal" (well as normal
as you can get !) Unix system.

FireWall-1 software on the other hand is generally accessed by GUI....
there are three of note (I refer to 4.1 releases........Status Viewer, Log
Viewer, and Policy Editor). You will need to install these on a Windows box
(maybe a Motif ?) and have the relevant network access.
You can also control FireWall-1 from the command line, but let's not go
there just yet !

I am afraid I cannot second-guess the state of the interface definitions,
but if you can get into Voyager it will help a lot ; there is also some
"help" on Voyager.

Let us know how you get on and what your setup is, and I will try and help
some more.......

Cheers, Gordon

Subject : [FW-1] Newbie Question

We purchased, through a bankruptcy sale, an entire operation that utilizes
Firewall-1. I'm not sure why but Checkpoint is being less than helpful as
we
(I) attempt to figure it out. They have transferred the license but when
asked about documentation, the only answer I have received is to check the
knowledge base on-line. Now, as good as the knowledge base is, for a
newbie,
I am looking for a manual that covers everything or at least give me an
understanding of the unit. The one we have is on a NOKIA box and I don't
even know what flavour of UNIX it runs for an O/S! Apparently I can get to
the network on the other side by utilizing something called SecureRemote
but
I can find no step by step account of how to accomplish this.

If anyone knows of an on-line manual or how I go about getting a printed
one
- please enlighten me.

Thanks for your help!
