When you use resources, the checkpoint proxy is in use, so connections
come from the firewall itself. When you use the straight packet-filter
rules, the proxy's not in use.

So I'd say that either:

- there's a problem with your NAT configuration (check the log to see
that the firewall is accepting and address-translating the outgoing
connections properly), or

- routing is not enabled through the firewall ('cat
/proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward' should show a "1").
