Reinhard it worked. As soon as the rule matched, in.asmtpd started.
It was a problem in the VRRP config.... smtp traffic never got to the fw
deamon.

the security server is started my firewall-1 when the first packet matches
the rule - so it waits for the first smtp-connection to start the
security-server.

if you try to make a smtp-connection ... is the security server started?
