your firewall will not blow up if you configure it to an internal
address.  Checkpoint recommends it to external interface, but I have
many clients who have licensed their firewalls to internal address and
there hasn't been any problems.

It counts the number of hosts which are behind the external interface to
check whether your license is correct. If you have a unlimited license
this
is not applicable, but you still have to configure the license to your
external interface.
