This biggest deal is to find out if it is OPSEC compliant or not to be able to write to the Firewall-1 on the fly. Other IDS extras to look for are the signatures, how to apply them, easy of use, updated signatures are quick to apply, false positives? How quick are they to produce new signatures for the IDS? What alerting options do you have; smtp, snmp, private scripting? What kind of database does it use to store the information and are you able to operate the DB? Is there a maximum size, easy to rotate, clear database, back-up? What kind of support do they offer for a reasonable price, 9-5, 9-24, 7/24 ? Can you have a central management if you want to add more sensors in future, extra license, cost...? That should get you started.
