I found my problem already. I overlooked a simple setting in the dialup connection: "enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP". I thought I had tried this, but maybe it wasn't active after all. This setting is available with all connections under XP whereas it shows only for LAN connections under W2K! Looks like XP defaults to talking to XP and W2K only over dialup. ... When I connect over dialup, I can authenticate fine with SR now, but I cannot connect to my Exchange server. However, I can ping various servers including Exchange. I have narrowed this problem down to a problem connecting to NT 4 servers. I can browse network shares on Win2K servers. I CANNOT browse network shares on NT 4 servers. I do notice the XP client uses the "msftds" (port 445) service exclusively to talk to the network whereas a Win2K client uses "rpc" (port 135) to communicate. Has anyone seen this behavior?...is there a workaround?...is Microsoft trying to force me to upgrade my servers past NT 4? Thanks! ...
