It routes the packets like a router would, but it scans the SMTP transactions, the FTP, and the HTTP for viruses -- if it finds one, it kills the transaction. It doesn't act as a mail relay in this mode, and it doesn't require your MX record to be redirected. A stand alone antivirus means that It must act as a proxy for http and ftp. For smtp to scan esafe must be your mta with primary mx. Esafe as router?
