Top is a pretty good tool, but it uses resources as well. You can also use this command: ps -eo vsz,comm to show the amount of memory (in K) that each process has. It's a nice program to see what is eating up your processor. Also, you would have to have a crontab entry (cron -l) that runs a command to export the log.
