This is a multipart message in MIME format. --=_alternative 004955F200256AE9_= Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" I have received several replies on this - thanks to all - at least I've tried pretty much everything now. For the record I have surrendered on this one - nothing seems to work so I either bin the 3COM 3C920s or 3COM Switches (or both !) :-( Cisco/Intel here I come..... ;-) 3COM and Dell were really helpful as usual ;-) Tim "Crist, Glenn" <[email protected]> 18/10/2001 11:42 To: [email protected] cc: Subject: RE: [FW-1] VERY Off Topic - Sorry Tim, The 3Com I have is an older "SuperStack II Switch". The management interface is a text based menu. The menu follows: SWITCH MANAGEMENT Management Level: `Unit` SETUP Spanning Tree: `Disable` The earlier suggestion about using fixed speed and duplex settings at the computer NIC is a very good idea. Good luck, -- Glenn Crist 330 - 659 - 1705 Sr. Network/Systems Engineer Bell & Howell Publishing Services (a subsidiary of ProQuest Company) 3900 Kinross Lakes Parkway Richfield, OH 44286-9381 -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Thursday, October 18, 2001 4:22 AM To: Crist, Glenn Subject: RE: [FW-1] VERY Off Topic - Sorry Glenn Thanks - probably stupid question but how did you disable - I thought I had tried that but want to check which box/settings. Thanks Tim "Crist, Glenn" <[email protected]> 17/10/2001 15:43 To: [email protected] cc: Subject: RE: [FW-1] VERY Off Topic - Sorry Tim, I had to completely disable spanning tree on the 3com LinkSwitch II's (and most other switches) to have ms windows 95 work. I had found that 95 tends to bounce the NIC several times while booting - causing many spanning tree starts - then timing out very quickly on the DHCP request. Hope that helps. -- Glenn Crist 330 - 659 - 1705 Sr. Network/Systems Engineer Bell & Howell Publishing Services (a subsidiary of ProQuest Company) 3900 Kinross Lakes Parkway Richfield, OH 44286-9381 -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Wednesday, October 17, 2001 11:00 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [FW-1] VERY Off Topic - Sorry Erik I have used that technique before for some troublesome HP Unix workstations in the past but it didn't work for this problem. Thanks though for the suggestion (copied to list in case anyone else wondering if I didn't try that - sorry again...(sheepish)...) Cheers Tim "Goldoff, Erik" <[email protected]> 17/10/01 15:49 To: "'[email protected]'" <[email protected]> cc: Subject: RE: [FW-1] VERY Off Topic - Sorry didn't say in your post, but if the Win95 stations' NICs are set to auto-speed/auto-duplex, set them manually instead to match what you want on the switch. ie... 100mps/half-duplex on the NIC, etc.. C600 running Windows 95. These machines had problems getting DHCP addresses - it would eventually pick it up but too late from the users' point of view because they didn;t get a network login screen presented at boot-up. Dell didn't help and didn't want to know (surprised - NOT!). Found a work around on our Cisco 3548 switches - turn on Port Fast mode. However can't find a workaround on the our 3COM Superstack II 10Mb switches - tried what I thought might be equivalent - Fast Start Mode but this has no effect. Couldn't find fix on web and 3COM aren't being helpful as the NICs are Dell OEM (arghhhhh!!). Curiously the C600s with Win2k are fine - looks related to Win 95 but we are not quite ready to fully rollout Win2k yet....... Any ideas anyone ? p.s. Before I get the suggestion - yes upgrading to Win2k and/or all Cisco switches would be nice but not likely until next year.... ;-) TIA Tim #********************************************************************** This message is intended solely for the use of the individual or organisation to whom it is addressed.
