I don't know if it's legal or not. What I do know is that it is immature. For a mailing list that is being subscribed to by professionals I am very surprised. Instead of groaning/moaning about out of office supplies the person who has a problem with them should simply put a filter on their e-mail client. Probably takes less time to do that then to write out e-mails complaining about them all the time.
