RE: [FW1] TCP/UDP ports for Bloomberg News

Title: RE: [FW1] TCP/UDP ports for Bloomberg News

Joe,

I understand your point but I think sometimes we lose sight of the forest for the trees.  Should we not talk about which port Telnet runs over or how RPC works because some script kiddie may get educated?

Witholding port information simply makes it more difficult for administrators to do their job.  If someone were to ask me how H.323 works I would more than willing to explain it to them.  Educating white hats is more valuable than trying to hide from black hats who will get the information whenever they need it.

Giving out port information is not the same as posting an exploit.

True enough, but why make it any easier?  I know guys who make a living cutting
through firewalls, OS's etc. I know they're out there and can get in if they want, but
should I not have any security policy? Maybe I should post the PW to my router to
save them some hassle. ;-)  Point is I'm not witholding anything a valid BB user
cannot obtain with a little pushing.

Why would withholding port information be a good thing?   Any black hat
would be able to figure out port information in a matter of minutes.

I was personally told by their head of infrastructure & Security that they
use 5 ports total.
Originally I was given the same range of ports you were by tech support.
The moral: Scream a little and they'll tell you the truth. ;-)  I don't
think posting them
publically would be doing anyone a favor however so if you're an admin with
BB clients call your ROM at
BB and they'll get the port #'s for you.

HTH,

- Joe

Mht,

The port ranges that I know of for Bloomberg are 8194/tcp-8294/tcp and
48129/udp-48192/udp.

Regards,

Ken...
