What CheckPoint needs to do first is to actually make a real Unix version of their GUI interface and not a WindU version. I've run HP-UX and Solaris versions of the GUI clients and they are a wreck. Terribly slow, constant crashes, redrawing problems, they run away with all of your memory until the client crashes, etc. Watch the memory utilization with one running and then try to view the implied rules. I've seen the Solaris versions use up about 300 MB or memory and then blow up. It might work 1 out of 5 times after the disk swapping stops, but usually it crashes. Just starting it, quickly editing a policy, then quitting it usually works kinda ok, but try leaving it up and doing a lot of work and it's a mess. I would only want CheckPoint to release a Linux version if it was a true Linux or Unix port and not the WindU version. A Linux (or a Unix version) version would need to be as fast or close to the speed and reliability as the MS Windows GUI clients. Also does anyone know if WindU (I can't remember who makes that, is it Bristol) is available for Linux? If not, then that might be why CheckPoint never released a GUI client since they don't have native Unix versions, only WindU versions.
