RE: [FW1] SecuRemote

Licensing:

As a rule of thumb, If you intend to customize the SecuRemote topology (i.e.
Split DNS or Secure Domain Login) then the license should be placed on the
Management Console. If you will never customize the topology, then you can
place the SecuRemote license on the Firewall Module. A SecureClient
license will always go on the Firewall Module (Firewall modules have the
policy server software, Management does not).

My recommendation is to always place the SecuRemote license on the
Management Console and the SecureClient license on the Firewall module. If
you purchase SecureClient, also get a SecuRemote license as well; so the
topology download can be customized in the future.

The licenses real functions are very simple:

SecuRemote license allows a module to give topology.
SecureClient license turns on the Firewall Modules policy server and allows
a module to give topology.

But to some degree this is moot. When you go to Checkpoints Web site to
register your SecuRemote cert key, they will ask for the IP of your
Management Console and one Firewall module; and send you licenses for both.

Upgrading SecuRemote/SecureClient:

It is always best to uninstall the previous SecuRemote/SecureClient before
installing a different one.
This is supposed to change in 5.0. Whereas Checkpoint has taken on an
attribute of Citrix and can automatically upgrade out-of-date clients (5.0
clients that is).

Subject: [FW1] SecuRemote

I have always been told that when upgrading to a new release of
SecuRemote you should uninstall the old version, reboot, install the new
version, reboot. In the release notes for 4185 it talks about upgrading
SecuRemote. Is this now a good thing??

Does anyone have any experience with upgrading SR that they would care
to share with me?

Thanks,
Curt
