The first reason that comes to mind to make the firewall the NAT boundary so it can have a real IP in order to make things like client and site-to-site VPNs easier to deal with in addition to being direct to the firewall and not proxied or anything like that. (if that is even possible..)

There are also some management issues, but they shouldn't present a problem with a static translation...

I would agree with this, but it needs more explanation.  I'm not sure I could offer a complete explanation, so...
