RE: [FW1] Axent Raptor vs Cisco PIX

Eric,
There is a huge difference in the way the pix and raptor operate. Raptor is
a proxy based firewall with stateful inspection. Pix is a stateful
inspection based firewall with some (limited) cut-through proxy functions.
Raptor also has a useful gui, while Pix Firewall Manager is of no good use;
the command line interface (ios lookalike) is the best option. While the
logs of both these firewalls are not easy to read, the Raptor log is IMO
easier to use than the pix one, the pix also don't save any logs locally,
but to a syslog server. Raptor Firewall 6.5 is a very nice product which IMO
provides better security than the Cisco Pix, but if you want performance
(network throughput) the Pix is better. You should also consider checkpoint
(Nokia) against these firewall black boxes.

Just my ?0.02

Lars

Subject: [FW1] Axent Raptor vs Cisco PIX

Hi there,

Does anybody knows what can justify such a price difference between
Axent Velociraptor and Cisco PIX ?
According to the comparisons found on www.spirit.com the main
specifications are identical, but the price is really higher for Raptor
...

I really wonder if there is a huge difference in the way the firewalls
operate or if it is just a marketing approach.

 Thanks for your comments.

Eric
