In attempting to connect a modem to the 650's console port for out of band management, I've encountered a few problems. I've got the modem configured with the same DIP switches and register settings we use for the cisco router console modems, and it kind of works. When connected to the console port, I can see logging messages indicating when the system reboots, starts/stops a process, or a user logs on. However, I cannot log in to the firewall or run any commands on it. I've found a few Nokia knowledge base articles which discuss the use of console modems, but Neither mention the 650. The first article, Resolution 924, has the following caution (regarding a 440); NOTE: Do not hook up the modem to the console port as there is a known problem where the unit will have problems booting if there is a modem connected to the console port It goes on to say that the modem should be connected to the 2nd serial port. However, the 650 doesn't have a second serial port, so this doesn't seem to apply. The other article, resolution 2148, has this to say about the console port; The only out-of-band management on the console port supported by the Nokia Application Platform is through a terminal server. Because the console port does not support flow control, any device which requires flow control signals (such as a modem) will not function correctly. Are you aware of any means by which we can connect a modem to the Nokia for out of band management? ================================================================================ To unsubscribe from this mailing list, please see the instructions at http://www.checkpoint.com/services/mailing.html ================================================================================
