After making sure that the firewall passes your smtp through and no ICMP errors received, I would try to open a direct telnet connection on port 25 from your mail server to the destination mail server, like #telnet destinationserver.blahblah.com 25. See if you can talk to it. Having trouble getting emails out to certain locations, specifically a couple of .EDU locations (this one happens to be the University of Cincinnati) example: [email protected] I get message delayed, and then a delivery failure notificaton to the sender by my outbound SMTP server (which is behind firewall). Messages to other locations work just fine. I've tried logging everything (implied rule 0's, all my normal "drop" rules - like ident, etc) to see if I could determine what is happening , but no luck. I can see the SMTP send out it's SMTP request to their server, like it's going out from my system to theirs, and that's it. Then a few seconds later, another try from my SMTP server. Eventually, the sender gets the delivery failure notice. I am running NAT, no SMTP service on firewall (just allow SMTP from source to destination NAT'ted server). Any suggestions?
