BMC Patrol is fairly cool if you want to monitor standard app and OS functions. SNMP and RMON work great if you're into that and the proper MIBS are provided. I used to like sending all data to a specific syslog facility (local1). The choice is yours, really. If I want to detect if the applications running in the DMZ are functioning, what applications/tools that I can use? What port can I open? Any comments are welcome.
