I build my kernels only with minimal options my hardware runs with and
driver support for nics/scsi/raid adapters I never use "as module"
(a firewall shouldn't be a workstation with sound support/usb/frame buffer
etc....)

For the fwmod_smp 2.2.x you should select these options too:

CONFIG_MODULES=y
CONFIG_MODVERSIONS=y

For smp kernels it is a good choice to select the following option too:
CONFIG_RTC=y

Never add support for ipchains firewalling.....
