Jeff,
I have managed to do it between my CheckPoint 4.1 SP2 and a CISCO2610
with Firewall Feature Set and 56bit IPSEC.

There are certain limitations like:
preshared secret
MD5 
no aggresive mode
no subnets. 
But other than that it should work and there is a pretty good example in
both 
Nokia Secure Knowledge (in case you have a Nokia) .
