Do both I use mimesweeper for smtp and just have a rule that allows port 25 in and out to mimesweeper. I have another MX record that points to the FW1 SMTP security server in case the mimesweeper box is out of action. All incoming mail that goes through the SMTP security server gets forwarded to mimesweeper. What do you need the CVP server for? The SMTP security server seems to have ongoing problems with handling mail (V3 v4 and 4.1 have always had some bugs fixed in them in this area) Mimesweeper in my experiance is more solid Qualification: we are a 250 user site and do not use NAT , your milage may vary... cheers dean -----Original Message----- From: Ed Davidson [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Thursday, 12 October 2000 8:34 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [FW1] SMTP I have Mailsweeper for SMTP. I am will be moving over from IBM firewall to Firewall-1. There are two ways I can configure SMTP. The SMTP server will be on the LAN, not the DMZ nor the Internet as 90% of our mail is local to local. It doesn't make sense to place all that traffic on the firewall. I see my options as; #1) NAT on the firewall to pass port 25 to my mail server, and NAT to allow the mail server to send mail out. #2) SMTP Relaying - Incoming e-mail is sent to the firewall, which sends it to my CVP server, then sends it to my Mailsweeper. Outgoing mail hits my Mailsweeper, then the firewall which in turn sends it out to the recipient. What are the benifits of the different methods? Is the SMTP relay on firewall-1 good? I have a ton of control over Mailsweeper - I don't see this with the FW1 SMTP relay. Am I missing something?
