RE: [FW1] Reasons against opening I-net access..

Thats how we feel. We monitor logs and bring up issues with management,
but being a dictator from the get go doesn't make our network anymore
secure or make our people work harder.

Frankly, letting people go check there stocks, follow there retirement
funds and check the news seems to keep there brain flowing. I see LESS
work coming from people restricted from communications because boredom
does strange things to ones mind.

Believe me, we are about 250 users as well, it is easy to track a
consitantly abusive user. It is not economical nor ethical for us
to dictate who gets what. I guess we work on a team, and a team
doesn't work together when only certain people have the resources
to do there job.

Being able to check prices, follow competitors, watch your options,
keep track of friends, do your email, follow the news, watch streaming
media for training, video conference, hell even listen to ra music
streams keeps our people productive.

Even blocking out ICQ and aim is bad. Developers/is persons and even
engineers and such use these services to keep up with friends and usually
other persons with similar talents. Questions can be solved quicker,
resources are more readily available on icq/aim/irc then just about anywhere
else other then http://www.google.com and http://www.dejanews.com :)

Despite the huge potential the internet has for abuse by workers it's
also in my experience the most valuable work tool that I have. Be too
restrictive in your access control and you might as well not have access
at all.

Graham
